RV travels after Ft Benton

Lets see after we left Ft. Benton we changed directions south to get out of another major storm. Headed to Wy and then to Utah and now in Nevada.. Not much to tell really, we drive most of the day then make camp and stay inside the RV. have not been to a tourest place of interest since leaving Benton. Today however had to be the longest drive with nothing to look at.. Utah from Salt Lake to the Nevada State line is nothing but lots of nothing... All photos tonight are of Utah and Utah only..

Leaving Fort Benton MT

Woke up to rain and cold weather today, not what you want to drive in. After walking the dogs and checking the weather forecast we packed up the RV and hit the road hoping the forecast was going to be right and it would clear by late morning.

Sometime around 10am the rain stopped and we had semi clear skis. So was able to get some photos of the road and what was along the way. Needed to get some supplies for both us and the pets so when a Wal Mart came along we pulled in and stopped. Went in and picked up what was needed, and came out to rain. Storm had caught up to us. Turned around and went back into Wal Mart for lunch ( Subway ) to wait out the worse of the rain.

Once back on the road we made our way to our chosen camp area for the night. We will stay overnight in the dirt lot of a small restaurant called the 4B's off I-90 in Deer Lodge Mt... We have no hookups so internet is battery run only... Might be able to recharge at McDonnell's later tonight or tomorrow morning.. For now enjoy the photos of today's drive.

Did Fort Benton Tourist thing today.

First thing this morning we took the dogs out for a walk, went down to the river and checked out some of the sites. First thing in the morning we started out wearing winter coats and jeans. One hour later took dogs back to the rig and went to find a place for breakfast, left the winter jackets in the rig...

Had breakfast at a place called the wake up, just a small place inside a small ally. Food was good but the service, much like last night was slow to say the least. Bet is one of the girls had to run to a store to get some eggs.. Ate our meal outside at a table in the shade, then spent the better part of an hour talking and just enjoying the day.

Next we took a long walk around town checking out book stores, the bank, local hardware store, soda shop, and the market. During the walk along the river we caught up on local history from all the markers posted along the way. Learned about old Shep, Steamboat landing in Ft. Benton, Learned about Mullan's road, ( road from Fort Benton MT to Walla Walla Washington.) The old Fort Benton is currently under renovation and only open for guided tours twice a day, so all we got to see was the outside walls.

For the most part if one comes here without knowing the history you will not notice much more then an average small US town trying its best to survive. The town has a very strong history and I hope it has a bright future ahead, it is a good place to visit if you like US history..

Hello from Fort Benton MT

Had a good day today, sun was out and the drive to Fort Benton was very pretty. First off we found a small dinner for breakfast, and it turned out to be the local hang-out for the farmers/ranchers of the area. So as we ate we could listen in to the local news about how things have been to wet to get any real work done. Even through it was Sunday the men all planed to take advantage of the sunshine and warm temp today was bringing.

After breakfast it was North to Fort Benton, two hundred and 5 miles per our GPS... Should have been an easy drive with the clear weather and all, however mother nature played a nasty trick on Kay and we ended up making several unplanned stops, so she could take care of things.

The drive itself was easy going and offered many photo options. The ones posted here are the ones I like the best of all... Only posted 10% of the ones I kept...

Headed out for dinner tonight, hope to get some shots of the city tomorrow..

North Dakota

Left Custer SD around 9am and drove to Rapid City SD to the Wal Mart.. Purchased a few items then hit the road to North Dakota, a place called Bowman. However before we got to Wal Mart we had a close call with a car. Making a left turn we crossed over to the left lane to early and side swiped a car, no majoy damage to either one of our units but things could have been messy. We got lucky when the lady in the car did not want to exchange information and just wanted to go. We were happy to let things go seeing it would have held us up for hours or more.

Once back on the road from Wallly world the frig had a low voltage alarm, so thinking we had a bad battery we turned around and went back to the same wally world. Once in the parking lot and able to look at the battery found one cable was bridging so,,,, took it off and put back on without the bridge and all was well with the frig..

Lost several hours one way or the other so did not get to Bowman ND until around 4:30 pm local time. This was only a 217 mile trip but took all day... Staying at this camp ground with so slow internet for two nights... Place would be good in warm weather, if you had fishing gear, a bike, or a boat... The weather is not warm, we do not have any fishing gear or a boat, or a bike so it sucks..

Took a long walk to try and get photos the five posted are the best of the place..

Mt. Rushmore

Today June 3, 2010 we made it to the great Mt. Rushmore. When you walk thru the gate it feels more like you are walking into a church then a tourist attraction. Walkway is all paved, and all state flags are flying framing the faces of the great ones on the Mt. Took lots of photos and walked around as much as allowed. I felt it must have been better back when it was not a paved pathway and you could climb on the rocks to shot photos, but alas I will never know. So the photos are being posted for your viewing pleasure...

Tonight and for at least the next night or two we plan to make camp in Custer SD and recharge ourselves.

Wall Drug SD

Made it to the famous Wall drug in Wall SD. Walked around and did the tourist thing, tried not to buy too much and did okay, not great. For the most part I thought it came across as a cross between an amusement part and a very large gift shop. Things are geared more for kids and that is fine, now I can finally say I have been to the Wall. Stayed overnight in the Wall parking lot without and Elect so no internet again.

Next stop will be Mt. Rushmore.....

Road to Wall Drug Part 2

After leaving Kansas our luck finding good camps took a turn downwards. Tried to stop several times at places in Nebraska that we had read about only to find problems. First was a City Park in Ansley said to have 6 RV sites with Elec. and water... OOPs on this one it had what might at one time have been 6 sites, but at no time did it have elec... Next try was at Berwyn Village Park, well we could not even find this one so off we go to the next, Number three was in Broken Bow KS, was a park with RV setups for 6 units with elec.. for $5.00 a night.... again when we found it things looked old and the grounds had not been kept up. Looked more like old junk in someone's back yard, did not feel right.. The next place on the list was a few miles up the road so we really wanted it to pass inspection, and it did. We found our home for the night at Halsey NE in the National Forest. Made camp with just enough time before we got hit with a rain and hail mixture of a storm.
